Backup Software Review

I recently purchased a Western Digital 160 GB Passport portable external backup hard drive from Sofmap, Akihabara, Japan. I was not expecting that it will have so much useful data backup software with encryption.

When I just connected it to my PC the data backup wizard started, asked for specific files or complete data synchronization and backed up my whole hard drive without any problems. The software that did this was specially developed for WD by a relatively unknown French company “Dmailer“.

Dmailer Sync: Dmailer Sync is used to securely synchronize your important data (documents, audio, photos, video files etc), computer settings, emails with attachments (MS Outlook, Outlook Express or Windows Mail) etc from you PC to any mobile storage device (USB flash drive, flash card, hard disk drive, iPod, mp3 players etc).

You may say hey I can just copy all these things to my USB what is the catch here?

a) Save Time: You are saving your time with having all the latest data in you USB with just the click of a button.

b) Data Redundance and Security: You don’t need to carry your laptop all the time with all the security and baggage hassles that come with it. Even if you do carry it, this is an added layer of defense to your arsenal. Don’t risk your $10,000 business meeting relying solely on your laptop and don’t risk your $100,000 data by putting it on an un-secured USB stick.

c) Data Availability: If you are even a bit security conscious you will never put all your business emails since the last so many years on the internet even on your company’s secure server (not to talk about the free internet services like gmail, hotmail yahoo etc). You will always download all the email in the desktop emailing program of your choice like MS Outlook, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes (my choice) etc. But then you are always laptop dependent.

Try sending an email from any public location like airport, cybercafe etc mostly they will not allow someone to load and run applications as their administrative rights have been removed. But not with Dmailer. Using just your USB stick you can not even have all your corporate email on your finger tips but you may also send and receive email without the need of Outlook, MS mail etc Cool!.

All I can say is that you can’t go wrong with this software, if it is good for Western Digital to put on their products it is good for you!

It is very important to note that Dmailer Sync is NOT a backup program. It synchronises. If you lose files on your PC and then run this program: it will delete them from your external device too, rather than restoring them.

Dmailer do produce backup software, though. It’s called Dmailer Backup (surprise, surprise). That’s actually what I was hoping to find reviewed here rather than Dmailer Sync, because it does sound quite good to me.
